No name, no blame : [1977] / by Marybelle Howe ... Christmas 1977.

Memoir describing her work as an uncredited child extra in 1923 during the filming of a silent movie, Pied Piper Malone (1924) on location in Georgetown, S.C.; this film was produced by Famous Players-Lasky Corporation, and distributed by Paramount Studios. Includes editorial comments and annotations by an unidentified hand. Howe's essay describes activities during the fall and winter of 1923 as seen by a second-grade girl, including names of school friends, relatives, and neighbors, including "Mum Dye ... as an ex-slave to quality people she set herself up to hold the children of the neighborhood (especially the girls) to high standards of social deportment" who was concocting medicinal teas and herbal remedies during Howe's visit, and Capt. Frank, who observed that "men who spent a lot of time with Mother Nature, so to speak - men who lived mostly in the woods or on the water - had a tendency to take wildlife seriously and the human race lightly." Howe discusses aspects of filming a silent movie, including evidence that some aspects of the plot did not become clear until she screened the completed production months later; Howe also describes her family and home in detail, including the furnishings of the large bathroom which had "the only stove upstairs" that served her family of six; details of the motion pictures production company, which arrived at Georgetown in four Pullman train cars; social events for the film makers held at Winyah Indigo Society Hall and various plantation hunting preserves; her family's Christmas celebration and traditional fireworks; and other actives.
